A Mother’s Journey with TMS Therapy for Autism – Dominick’s Story
In this heartfelt story, Marcella shares her journey as a devoted mother navigating her son Dominick’s autism diagnosis. Through their experience with TMS therapy, they found transformation and renewed hope. Her story offers encouragement, valuable insight, and inspiration for families seeking new pathways in autism treatment.
My name is Marcella, and I have a 4-year-old Son named Dominick. He is the sweetest little guy and his laugh is contagious.
At the age of 2 years old Dominick was still not talking and was diagnosed with Autism.
Since that day I have been researching and looking into ways to help him. Along the way I have learned there are several levels of Autism, as well as several children that are diagnosed with overlapping conditions. I quickly learned that my struggle while some parents can relate is not as severe as others but that does not diminish what our family and Dominick are experiencing. This allowed me to focus on trying everything recommended and watching to see if it worked for my child. We have tried it all: Camels milk, hyperbaric chamber treatments, vitamins, herbs, therapy and more.
In the summer of 2024 Dominick was lashing out physically and we were all exhausted. I hated to see him so dysregulated. I was in support groups on Facebook and looking into different recommendations or comments from other parents. In December 2024 I came across a post about a treatment being used for children called Trans magnetic Stimulation (TMS).
I began researching and saw that it was non-invasive and yielded great results. The downfall was like most treatments, this is not covered yet by Insurance for Autism. I found there were little to no side effects and researched clinics in my area.
That is when I found Complete Mind Care.
I reached out and received a call from Michael Flyer. He shared his story of his son and set up a meeting with Randy, the owner. Randy accommodated meeting us on a weekend. Randy answered every question I had and believe me I had a lot.
My biggest concern was not that it would hurt Dominick as research showed this was almost unheard of but I was worried I was going to change the smiling, cuddly, laughing son I love and know how to communicate with on a non-verbal level.
My husband and I discussed and decided to go forward with the treatment. I took Dominick for his first EEG and there was a mix up. I was a wreck and voiced my opinions to Randy and Michael and I explained how, as a parent of an autistic child, we are always in fight or flight mode and one small incident away from a mental breakdown because all our patience was used on our children.
We discussed what happened and they convinced me to try again, and I am glad I did.
Everyone in the office is so kind and assumed competence with Dominick. They said hi to me and Dominick. They got to know things he liked and accommodated what was needed to get him to sit for the treatment.
Prior to this treatment Dominick could say go, he would respond to his name sometimes, he was physical in times of frustration, but he did not have an issue with sleep. Within 4 days of treatment, I saw Dominick come alive. He was so observant. He was looking out the car window, looking up at birds, and planes. He would come up to me and stare into my eyes, touch and look at my nose.
These are all things we had not experienced with him before. I was trying not to get too excited because I didn’t want false hope. After the first 15 treatments he started showing me his age on his fingers and then saying the word four when we would ask his age. He says his name is Dodo and he can say purple. Before we knew it we would ask questions and he would reply to repeating new words like cookie, ocean, and so much more.
During the treatment Dominick did appear to have a headache one or two times. His appetite increased. He was overstimulated in two sessions, but we just ended the session early to accommodate him.
He also did have two nights in the 30 days that we saw a change in sleep, but this was most likely due to his disruption in his routine. Dominick does have a structured schedule with OT, Speech, and ABA.
Dominick is also on a Gluten Free and mainly Casien Free Diet. It has now been over 30 days since his treatment has ended and he is doing activities that he wants us to interact with. He is doing somersaults and looks to us for cheering. He wants to play and is imitating games we play with him like tickles.
It’s been life changing and a help for Dominick. He seems so much more calm in his body.
While I cannot guarantee that this will work for your child, or even if TMS by itself works, what I can say is this was one of the best decisions of my life, thus far with Dominick. Being the parent of an autistic child looks different for each person. Whatever part of the journey you are on we are all searching for things to help us give our children the best life possible and I believe TMS treatment is worth a try. It helps with behaviors, sleep, and even speech.
I am open to speaking to any parents and will answer any questions. Whatever you decide from one parent to another I hope your journey is filled with love and laughter with your amazing son or daughter.
